Requirements

The nonprofit sector of the economy is growing and opportunities are increasing for employment and careers in a variety of fields, including social services, health, education, natural resources, recreation and community development.

The University of Florida offers an interdisciplinary minor drawing on the expertise of faculty and staff from many disciplines and departments including: Agricultural and Life Sciences, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Journalism and Communications, and Business Administration.

This minor develops professional competencies in leadership and management that prepare students to work in nonprofits as well as businesses and government agencies that work with nonprofits. The nonprofit minor is competency based focusing on the requirements of the American Humanics certification program. Undergraduate students completing the minor receive official recognition on University of Florida transcripts.

The minor in organizational leadership for nonprofits is designed for undergraduate students from all disciplines who wish to focus their careers on nonprofit work in a variety of specialized fields.

The minor is awarded to undergraduates who have completed at least 17 credit hours of approved courses classified into core and elective categories. The curriculum includes 17 hours of coursework, 11 hours chosen from core courses (including 2 hours of approved internship work) and 6 hours chosen from approved electives. A minimum grade of C for each course counted in the minor is required. All core courses must be successfully completed.

Certification from American Humanics

Students enrolled in the minor may complete further work to receive certification from American Humanics, Incorporated, a national organization whose mission is to prepare and certify future nonprofit professionals to work with America’s Youth and families. American Humanics, Incorporated works with nonprofit partners including the American Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, National Urban League, and United Way of America and others. Graduates receive priority access to competitive, salaried nonprofit employment opportunities, particularly among national nonprofit organization partners. To receive American Humanics certification, students must participate in the student organization and complete a series of workshops and experiences beyond the requirements of the minor.
